This has been called the greatest nutritional discovery of our lifetime. In fact, the media has nicknamed Resveratrol as the “fountain of youth”.

What is Resveratrol?
It's a natural compound found in grapes, mulberries, peanuts, and other plants or food products, especially red wine.

All Resveratrol products are NOT created equally!
Resveratrol exists in two forms--trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol.    Research has proven that trans-resveratrol is the biologically active isomer form.  Some resveratrol products are listed simply as “resveratrol” or “total resveratrol” which does not identify whether it is the active "trans-resveratrol" molecule.   On a product’s Supplement Facts Panel you should look for 3 things:

1) Amount of "trans-resveratrol" per capsule

2)  Amount of actual Resveratrol (not just the amount of total ingredients which may only include a small amount of resveratrol)

3)  The purity of the Resveratrol

For example:  A product listed as “100 mg Trans-Resveratrol - 25%” only has 25mg of active Resveratrol.  You would, therefore, need to take 4 capsules to obtain 100mg of effective resveratrol.  Currently, most researchers are recommending individuals take 250-500mg of Trans-Resveratrol per day.

In addition, other ingredients must be used, or the "half-life" of resveratrol in the liver is only about 30 minutes. This can be increased to 12 hours with additional "proprietary" ingredients.

Resveratrol, as reported by the media, has potential in the metabolic support of the immune system, anti-aging, weight loss, sports performance, cancer concerns, and life extension. Resveratrol, is also found in red grapes, fruits, berries and root extracts. It was first isolated from Japanese Knotweed, Hy Zhang Root Extract (Polygonum capsidatum).

The bio-active chemical configuration is 3,5,4’-tri-hydroxy-trans-stilbene. This is a potent antioxidant.

Resveratrol is currently the single most studied substance in the world.  There are more than a few varieties and a number of sources. Recently, red wine has been identified as a potent source of resveratrol. The problem has been, one would have to drink 1000 bottles of wine a day to obtain a therapeutic amount. It is also found in the Japanese knotweed. Resveratrol is the substance behind the so-called “French paradox” whereby French people living in southern France eat a high fat diet yet have no heart disease – it is the Resveratrol in their red wine that completes the paradox.

Samurai warriors carried Japanese knotweed and regularly chewed on the shrub for strength – of course, they didn’t know what they were taking.

www.pubmed.gov and www.pogofrog.com have large amounts of very current information about these substances.  Pubmed, the National Institutes of Health article file, has over 2,000 current articles about resveratrol.
